Whether you’re Team PC or Team Mac, there’s no denying that today’s modern laptops simply aren’t lasting as long as they used to. Whether it’s a laptop that you use for home or work, bad habits combined with poor care and maintenance can see you quickly having to replace your laptop long before its time.
Whether you’ve found that your laptop is running slower than ever or viruses are becoming a common occurrence for you, don’t give up hope just yet. We’ve put together some top tips to help you extend the life of your laptop for as long as possible.
#1. Monitor Your System:
If slow running is your problem, then chances are there’s an application you are running which is taking over all your Random Access Memory (RAM) leading your laptop to run slower than usual. If you are a Mac user, you can determine the root of the problem by opening up Finder and going to Activity Monitor. From here, you’ll be able to see which apps are taking up the most memory and either quit the program or delete it from your laptop entirely to help speed things up. If you use a Windows laptop, there’s a similar process to follow – head to Resource Monitor, which can be found in the Task Manager. No matter which laptop you’re using, make sure that you uninstall apps correctly and only delete them if you’re 100% sure what it does.
#2. Keep It Cool:
During the summer months, you may have noticed that your laptop is overheating more than usual. But, keeping things cool is important all year round. There are several things that you can do to achieve this. First of all, make sure that your laptop has enough air flow. This can be done by keeping it elevated on a cooling pad, or by removing any obstacles around it on your desk. If you tend to work or browse the web when sitting in bed, don’t place the laptop directly on top of your bedsheets since this can quickly cause it to overheat. You can also clean your computer internally to get rid of any dust that could be contributing to a temperature rise.
#3. Stay Ahead of Viruses:
Viruses and malware are one of the biggest causes of slow laptop systems. And, they have become so advanced that many regular users may not even know that this is what they are dealing with. This is just one of the reasons why it’s so important to invest in a reputable anti-virus program for your laptop. Running regular scans will help you keep up to date with anything that seems suspicious and make you aware of any problems at the earliest possible convenience. Many anti-virus programs will also ‘clean up’ your computer, deleting any unwanted and unnecessary files that could be contributing to slowing things down.
#4. Free Up Hard Drive Space:
Last but not least, using over 80% of your available hard drive space can slow your laptop down significantly. Transferring your data to the cloud will not only help to speed things up but will also keep your files more secure.
