Understand your responsibilities

As an employer, your responsibilities can seem a little confusing. While you’re required to protect your employees from risks, you don’t have to remove all risk. However, what the law states is that you must have adequate health and safety procedures in place to ensure that your staff are safe. For example, if the stairs leading into your building are slippery when wet, you don’t need to change them. What you do need to do, however, is ensure that there’s a sign advising people of this. Do a risk assessment

The best way to ensure that you’re aware of all the health and safety risks is by doing a risk assessment. Walk around the building looking for any hazards or potential ones. Note down any risks that you see, focusing on the types of accidents they could cause. Next, you need to think about how serious the risk from each hazard could be. For instance, if a hazard could lead to a broken leg, it should be considered serious. If, however, it could lead to death, it should be noted as being severe. Once you’ve identified each hazard, it’s essential that you think about ways to minimize the risk from it. Any hazards that you notice and note down must be kept on record for safety purposes. As well as what you’ve done to minimize the level of risk.

Work out which areas need to be focused on

While there are some areas of hazard that you can deal with yourself, there are other areas that you cannot. For example, if you want to make your business less prone to fire, you need to call in a specialist company, such as Fire Safety. To make your company as safe from fire as possible, alarms, fire extinguishers and signs, need to be installed. You can’t do this yourself, as it requires specialist products. So you’ll need a helping hand from the experts. Or, for instance, if you’re a manufacturing company and use acid as part of your manufacturing process. You’ll need specialist help when it comes to health and safety, as you won’t know the ins and outs of that specific risk.

Ensure your employees have adequate training

You must also ensure that your employees have adequate training for health and safety. This means that before they start working for you, they need to undergo some basic training. This can be via a training facility or can be done online. Either way, it doesn’t matter, just as long as they’re aware of how to keep themselves safe at work. You need to ensure that you have informed all staff of where they can receive help, should an accident occur. As well as where the accident book is kept, so that all accidents can be recorded. Having an accident book is a legal requirement, so it’s essential that you have one on the premise.
