Who are the richest people in the world, and how did they achieve their success? In most cases, the billionaires on rich lists earned their status as self made men, and built up innovative businesses, or invested wisely, in order to create vast financial empires. Of the top five richest people in the world in 2013, all have been fixtures on the billionaire charts for several years, and have swapped places several times in terms of their total wealth. From Larry Ellison to Carlos Slim, the following represent the richest of the rich.
5 – Larry Ellison
This billionaire, whose personal fortune is valued at around $43 billion, achieved his success by running software company Oracle; the California company was one of the major forces in the burgeoning tech economy of the 1980s and 1990s, with Ellison moving from a relatively modest background towards being one of its most significant and aggressive leaders. Oracle fought vicious lawsuits with other companies in the 1990s, and Ellison has been part of some expensive lawsuits. That hasn’t stopped him, though, from becoming one of the wealthiest men in the world, with other interests in real estate, hardware and software, as well as a wide range of philanthropic investments – he also recently looked to buy up a Hawaiian island, and owns a collection of luxury yachts.
